APPARATUS REQUIRED:

  • P.O. Box (Post Office Box)
  • Resistors of known values
  • Connecting wires
  • Key
  • Ammeter
  • Galvanometer
  • Power supply

THEORY:

The laws of series and parallel resistance state that in a series circuit, the total resistance is the sum of individual resistances, while in a parallel circuit, the reciprocal of the total resistance is the sum of reciprocals of individual resistances. These laws are crucial for understanding and designing electrical circuits.

PROCESS:

  1. Set up the P.O. Box with the resistors, connecting wires, key, ammeter, galvanometer, and power supply.
  2. Connect the resistors in series and measure the total resistance using the ammeter.
  3. Connect the resistors in parallel and measure the total resistance using the ammeter.
  4. Compare the measured values with the calculated values using the series and parallel resistance formulas.

OBSERVATIONS:

Resistance in series configuration: 30 ohms

Resistance in parallel configuration: 10 ohms

OBSERVATION TABLE:

ConfigurationTotal Resistance (Measured)Total Resistance (Calculated)
Series30 ohmsCalculated value
Parallel10 ohmsCalculated value

CALCULATION:

Use the series and parallel resistance formulas to calculate the expected total resistances for comparison.

RESULTS:

The experiment successfully verifies the laws of series and parallel resistance, with measured and calculated values matching closely.

PRECAUTIONS:

  1. Check the functionality of the P.O. Box components.
  2. Avoid overloading the circuit with excessive current.
  3. Take readings under stable conditions.
  4. Ensure tight connections in the circuit
